Mark Henley

Mark HenleyMr Mark Henley graduated, MB ChB from the University of Birmingham Medical School and has been a Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeon to the Nottingham and Derby NHS Hospitals since 1994.

Mr Henley served in the Royal Navy for nine years and was awarded a commendation from the Commander in Chief for his work during the Falklands conflict.

Following general surgical training he commenced specialist training in 1988 qualifying FRCS (Plast) in 1993 and was appointed as a Consultant in 1994. As a trainee he was awarded the James Laing Memorial Prize of the British Burn Association, gained a Light-Millard Fellowship at the University of Miami, and completed his training with a Wellington Foundation Scholarship.

For more than 25 years he has had a major role in developing the Trent Regional Cleft Lip and Palate Service as a centre of excellence in his chosen subspecialty practice

Mr Henley is Past President of BAPRAS and has been an Officer and Council member of the BAAPS and has also been a member of the RCSEd Surgical Specialty Board in Plastic Surgery with a lead role in Education

Mr Henley is committed to education and training in plastic surgery. As the Founding Chair of the JCST Training Interface Group in Reconstructive Cosmetic Surgery he developed Interface Fellowships in Reconstructive Cosmetic Surgery, the Therapeutic use of Lasers, the Management of Major Soft Tissue Trauma and Skin Cancer. He became the first JCST Educational Adviser for all the Training Interface Groups and for 6 years was core to their further evolution and integration into JCST Training developing  constructive collaborations between all the specialties involved 

He has extensive experience both as an examiner and as an assessor of examiners for the Intercollegiate Specialty Examination in Plastic Surgery and was external examiner for the University of Manchester MSc course on Ageing skin and Aesthetic Medicine 

In 2017 Mr Henley was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Health Education England (HEE) for excellence in Postgraduate Medical Education.

Mr Henley has chaired and participated in numerous cosmetic surgery safety task forces including the Nuffield Council on Bioethics Working Party on cosmetic practice and the GMC in developing the publication Good Practice in Cosmetic Surgery.

In 2010, Mr Henley led the development of the highly successful specialty specific mutual indemnity scheme for plastic surgeons PRASIS to support improvements in patient care and standards of practice. This scheme is now the largest provider of indemnity for plastic surgeons undertaking private practice in the UK. He was core to the developing of its Code of Practice.

Mr Henley is the first elected president of the Confederation of British Surgery(CBS). He is applying the lessons learned from his development of PRASIS to establish INDIGO as a scheme to provide material support to the Surgical Advisory Service and assist surgeons and clinicians in all specialties to develop best practice and help improve their working lives.

As President of CBS, Mr Henley has been an invited member of the FSSA (Federation of Surgical Specialties Association) and is working with them to improve all aspects of UK surgical practice.

Mr Henley is married with three children. His personal interests include flying, walking and spending time with his family.
